Arrogant and out of touch – let’s start the petition!!

Well, I’ve truly had a (Warren Diego) gutful.

For how much longer must we put up with the nonsense about not using technology to ensure that crucial decisions in world cup games are correct?

Get with it Sepp!! Stop this nonsense about tradition and the papal-like infallibility of referees and embrace the technology that already exists, is readily available and is used in lots of sports to ensure that absolutely clanger decisions (like those made in the Germany v. England and Argentine v. Mexico today) are not repeated.

It won’t hold up play any longer than the “it was/wasn’t over the line”, “it was/wasn’t a handball”, “it was/wasn’t simulation/a penalty” protesting players are already.  There’s no need to implement its use in every level of the game – the world cup is the biggest event in the sporting world, countries spend a fortune and 4 years getting there and it’s credibility is being eroded by blatantly incorrect decisions that only serve to discourage talented people from becoming top class referees.

Why would you risk the ridicule (or worse) from your fallibility being exposed?

Is it going to take an Escobar style assassination of a referee or a world cup final to be lost to get this outdated and arrogant approach to the use of technology being changed?

I say: don’t wait for that.  I say: let’s start the petition. I say: let’s march on FIFA headquarters in Zurich. I say:  let’s get all eight of the Four Diegos installed on a rotational basis as FIFA President to get the rules changed and technology introduced.…maybe that’s a little too far but you get my point.

Diegos of the world, let’s unite on this!!

Being a Diego is a state of mind....not always a sane mind but one that nonetheless appreciates and understands the beauty and terror of an Álvaro Recoba free kick, the complexity yet simplicity of the off-side rule and one that always, always, always seeks the statements behind the statements of football officials.  It’s not an easy state of mind, but a rewarding

one....and one which is lovingly shared with my Diego brothers.  Amen.
