Some Golden Soft Sombrero Moments with Serge Cockburn
Diegos: “Congratulations on your part in the latest Crocodile Dundee film.
All the Diegos can’t wait to see you fight off crocodile whilst your juggling a soccer ball.
Have you enjoyed the role of Mick Dundee’s son and more importantly is all the filming interfering with your soccer training?”
Cockburn: “I like to take the soccer ball on to the movie set but most of the time I get in trouble because I’m usually wearing the clothes that I have to wear for the film and I’m not allowed to get them dirty.
I still get a chance though to wear my Fiorentina shirt with Paul Okon’s name on the back of it which is good. ”
Diegos: “ The Four Diegos spies tell us that last weekend your team played in the semi final of the local competition without you.
That must have been disappointing? Your brother Ned is playing in the grand final today. Will you be there to support him?”
Cockburn: “Yes it was disappointing. The team also lost 3-1 because the all the opposition goals were offside so that wasn’t good either.
I’ll be there to support my brother today in the grand final and I reckon that his team is going win.’
Diegos: “ Last week on 60 minutes you shocked Channel reporter Charles Wooley by saying that acting is good fun but what you really want to become is a professional footballer.
This is what we love to hear from young Aussies like you.
Which team would you like to eventually play for?”
Cockburn: “That’s a hard question. I want to play for Australia that’s for sure. The club team I want to play for is Fiorentina.”
Diegos: “ Serge promise the Diegos something? Promise us that you’re going to stay away from Leeds United ok? Don’t go anywhere near them. If you get a phone call from David O’Leary just hang up on him Ok?””
Cockburn: “I know Diegos. I promise I’ll hang up even though that’ll be a bit hard to do I reckon.”
Diegos: “ You spent the last year in Italy with your parents – George Negus and Kirsty Cockburn – going to school and playing soccer.
Was it hard to get used to the language and how well did they play junior soccer over there?”
Cockburn: “Sometimes it was. I had a lot of fun though because every time I said something and stuffed up everyone laughed. I sort of laughed as well because I didn’t notice what I was saying.
The kids in Italy are really good soccer players. I thought I was pretty good scoring a lot of goals when I first got there but after a while I was playing with the team and passing to other players more. ”
Diegos: “ We know that you are a huge Fiorentina fan.
Are you disappointed that Argentine superstar – Gabriel Batistuta has left the club to join Roma?”
Cockburn: “Sort of. He was my favorite player so I am disappointed but when he left he wasn’t playing very well, being lazy on the field and not trying that hard so I don’t think that we will miss him that much.”
Diegos: “ Did you ever have a kick around with Paul Hogan? Does Paul Hogan know anything about soccer?”
Cockburn: “No not really but that didn’t stop me from kicking it around on the set anyway.
I don’t think he knows that much about it. Next time I see him I’ll tell him that the Four Diegos think that he should learn more about soccer.’
